>ShelterA tarp. I bought a British army surplus tarp, new, for about $25. That thing's large, durable and packs down small. Make sure you have a waterproof bag to put it in, though, to keep it folded up and keep everything else in your bag dry once it's got wet once.
>Food Should be the dried, add-water-and-boil kind. No cans, no perishables, even MREs should be carried sparingly, they're heavy and bulky because they've got all that water in the bag already.
>WaterSurplus 1l water bottle (or a sturdy plastic one if ultra-budget) or Camelbak to carry the drinking supply. Collapsible water bag for storing more in your camp.
Obviously you need to purify water. You can either buy a Millbank bag (which needs to be filled with silt and sand to work, be warned) or a pump filter, either will do but I swear by my Katadyn water filter for the convenience. Then either add water purification tablets or boil to kill what the filter didn't catch.
