Funny, I didn't experience the weather as bad. you can have a nice time in the remote parts, I did a pub crawl and ate at every place that sells hot food and drank at every pub, which meant I had a drink and hot chow every 2-3 days. Cask ale is the tits!
In retrospect I brought way to much gear, but it was my first time and I wasn't aware how convenient camping and hiking in Scotland is. bring a rod along if you are into fishing, brown trout is great. Also if you are near the coast you can forage for clams and limpets and such.
