The locals said to stay clear of them in the winter unless you have a lot of experience (in this case it was 4x4 overlander types I mostly spoke with). The foothills of the Pyrenees, are wonderfully mild in both autumn and spring. If I were you, I would probably stick to the Med coast during the coldest period, rather than go up the mountains.
