>>529106> So this will be my first true hunting season where I have a spot (17 acres on private land)Do you own the land, is it a hunting lease or family / friend's property or are just being invited to hunt there?
If you can be assured of access to the land, (as opposed to being invited somewhere) I'd suggest starting a deer feed plot, which is kinda like a garden for deer, using a variety of seeds so that there is always something yummy growing there all season long, which encourages the deer to visit that spot all year long and greatly increases your chances of having them visit when you're up in your tree stand on opening day.

>>529408 also knows what he's talking about; get a game camera and regularly visit the property throughout the year to download any pics and simply to become familiar with it and get a handle on where and how the deer move thru it and thus where the best spot for you tree stand will be, which also gets the deer used to having a human show up occasionally on their territory and they'll be less prone to freaking out come deer season.
I'd also suggest looking into bow / crossbow hunting, as bow hunters get first crack at any deer and it will double (or more) the amount of time you can deer hunt.
