I've heard people say that having a beautiful view is an evolutionary advantage, but that doesn't explain why one can find streams, flat deserts, and places in canyons beautiful. Storms as well. I think, and I have read parts of this in places, that the reason we enjoy these places is because they show some awesome power which gives us humility. These places, much like the stars we can see while we are in them, inspire wonder and the pursuit for knowledge. Present in nature is a sense of mystery. Unlike civilization, where every detail is planned out by us, nature's details are not, thus we seek understanding. As others have said, it can be calming as well, allowing us to either contemplate without effort, or even just be at peace in a world in which exaggerates the opposite.
