I've made you a rough map of places to avoid. They either are not worth your time or stuff you can easily find in your home country. Some people will try to vouch for certain areas/states but they're probably locals or there is 1 or 2 minor /out/ related attractions that have bigger/better options elsewhere. The East coast is mostly an overpopulated clusterfuck, particularly from NC to NY. I only left the South East areas open in case you're interested in the swamps, otherwise, it's just sand beaches and boring fish compared to what you would find in Aus. To see some things you won't find back home, the Pacific Northwest is probably your best bet with the redwood forests and the Rockies through much of the West. The far North East and Upper Michigan peninsula/Wisconsin area is a more subtle beauty but special none the less, and not something you'd see in your home country.
