I've got a little experience with that. 5000+ miles and over three months around the South-Western US on an XR650L.
I didn't bring anything for sleeping but a shitty tarp and a sleeping bag, but I could have used a good hammock or tent more than once. I think which is a matter of personal preference. I mostly slept on the ground beneath the open sky with the tarp as a ground cloth.
I didn't actually bring cooking equipment. I ate all food that could be kept at room temperature for the duration, with the occasional hot meal when I was in a town. I got used to it pretty quickly. When I passed through towns I'd get fresh fruits and vegetables and eat them before they went bad.
Some things I can strongly suggest are a decent little set of tools. Bring a couple wrenches of the size used by most things on your bike. A pair of pliers, some wire, a couple screw-drivers, electrical tape. Not as important if you wont be going off road, but still suggested.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, get a decent set of rain-gear. I can't stress this enough. I went with a shitty set of $15 rubber rain gear and the couple of times I hit rain in the high mountains the water slowly got in around the neck and waist and then I froze my fucking tits off.
I've got lots of other little info if you're interested
