It's weird that because I grew up in New England I always took the local wildlife for granted, even though every March absolutely millions of spring peepers and thousands of tree frogs would just blare so loud you couldn't hear anything else every single evening. It wasn't until I was basically an adult that I stopped to notice how extraordinary that is. Now I'm in Australia and I have a similar experience with the cicadas. Everyone takes them for granted, but sometimes they're so loud it sounds like a fire alarm is going off in the house next door.
