If we set off early enough, over the footpath from Grasmere, around the side of the hill, we would have plenty of time to walk that short bit of the Cumbria Way and find somewhere suitable. Maybe near the quarries, or SE towards Elter Water. Or NW towards the campsite near the 3 car parks (287057) if we can't find anywhere suitable for wild camping in time.
You got any experience with winter camping? Because I don't have shit, nor any gear specifically tailored for it.
