Imagine having to take care of a horse or two and go to the effort of hooking the thing up to a carriage every time you want to go further than 5 miles for anything. Imagine having to heat water on a fire before you can take a hot bath which may be the same water that the previous 10 people used or try sending a message to a distant family member and having to wait a week or two for a response.
If a normal person joined the Amish they would leave pretty soon after or try and change the rules until the Amish are no different than everyone else in which case they aren’t Amish anymore.
