I also know the ~10 dubloon class. Yes, they will throw photons around as well. No, they most often don't have different modes, they will chew thru batteries. Yes, build quality depends on weekday, temperature and moon phase, combined. I had two of those. I gave one away because the hinge mechanism plainly sucked. I had to fix wiring before giving it away. The other just lives in a tool box as backup, which i only needed yet because lamp #1 could not walk to me by itself (which was not a buying criterium).
