> bugsI tried the tarp thing for a while, actually a Black Diamond Megamid, a pyramid-shaped floorless tent. Used a waterproof groundcloth inside. Single-pole set-up, or you could hold the top up with a rope tied to an overhead branch. I used it a lot, but twice bugs woke me up crawling into my ears. Now I use an MSR "Missing Link," a fully enclosed single-wall tent with strategic net-covered vent holes (pic). I've stayed 100 percent dry and bug-free in the thing, including waking up in a couple inches of snow. It has been discontinued, but MSR has a couple replacements, fully enclosed single-wall tents. Here's one of them, only .71 kg plus your trekking poles:
