How "innawoods" do you want to go
Primitave camping is fun, but only in limited amounts. Not something I choose to do on a regular basis, but being able to survive in that situation (know how to make fire, basic first aid, situational awareness (wildlife/terrain hazards), navigation/orienteering, communication) is good knowledge to have.
I camp regularly year-round, but that aspect is usually secondary to riding. So i'm generally base-camped from the truck... a couple of fuel jugs full of gasoline, propane grill-stove, laptop/phone/cables for cameras... in the winter I bring a generator along with the trailer... summer I'll usually tent-camp, and can get away with just my big deep-cycle battery for a couple of days. While not exactly "roughing it", it's still more /out/ than staying at a hotel (cheaper too).
Pic related, camped onnamountain in the snowmobile trailer over new years. Rode 3 days straight. Generator hummin away outside, keeping the batteries that power the furnace/lights charged, and powering the TV/DVD player.
