The ONLY hope for nature in the future is for us to learn to incorporate the natural world into the human world.
We cannot expect populations to backpedal significantly, we can't expect enough land to be preserved to be adequate, we can't expect agriculture to cease, and we cannot expect the technology will be reeled back.
Imagine what would happen if we turned all our lawns to native meadow, imagine if all of our farm land had hedges along every quarter section, imagine if every urban and suburban park was designed with a fully functioning ecology in mind. This won't be enough for every species, some won't be able to withstand the habitat fragmentation and are essentially too shy to live along side us, but its the only realistic route for the future.
