>>1248925I've done this before and it's worked OK. My advice to you would be research the apple you are planting the seeds from. You want one that doesn't suffer excessively from disease, otherwise you might get canker develop below the graft union killing an otherwise successful attempt (this has happened to me on Cox's Orange seedlings).
Otherwise graft as low as possible and after a few months, when the graft is nicely healed, pile up the soil around it so that the scion can root and the rootstock is completely buried. That way you don't have to worry about canker below the graft, and the vigour will be determined by the scion after it puts out its own roots.
