I like having multiple knives for multiple tasks. I have a multitool for multitool things, and either a folder or full tang knife that's tough enough to be ABLE to baton with.
Is batoning a regular occurance? Mmmm..... Depends, sometimes it's easier to make kindling by batoning than overkilling with a hatchet.
I bring a hatchet if it's going to be a long trip and I'll be gathering a large amount of wood from the area. I also primarily am group camping (Yay, I'm Dad) so I have myself and a couple other peoples to worry about.
I like the fiscars/gerber hatchets for the weight and what you get, even better if you get the one with the saw. They're actually sharp enough and retain their edge that you'll never have to worry about batoning... and anyone that says you can't rehaft it is a fucking moron that doesn't remember how to rock out like alley oop.
