Bought mine pre-assembled. The antenna was two pieces about 24m long each, forming a dipole. The wire I was using was enamel coated, like the kind you use for winding motors and transformers. If I had of abandoned the wire in the field, nothing of value would be lost. If you can get it about 1m off the ground you will get NVIS good out to about 400km. Are you near any of the linked repeaters in VK7? There are a few on Allstar that are often connected to the VK6-HUB..
