Leather footwear must be greased regularly not to crack and to remain waterproof. Natural grease mixes are more compatible.
To grease boots scoop a small amount from the tin with the tip of your hand, then apply a THIN layer starting from the tip using the palm, the hand's warmth aids the process.
Only grease smooth leather, suede and similar don't need that, only grease boots without membrane, only apply on the outside.
Polish can be used to fill scratches in a similar manner, using a rag instead of the hand and rubbing the boot once it has dried to remove the excess and get a proper finish.
Special polish must be used to condition leather footwear with a membrane, other products will clog and destroy it.
