On my moto, that typically means parking/stopping where if something happens I can dump the clutch and go forward, and not have to navigate around an object (rock, another vehicle, etc). On the sled, that's knowing my surroundings and parking where I can just go forward, not have to turn around to get out of hazardous terrain (usually an avalanche slope).

Human defense... in a small subcompact, 380/9mm. Compact or larger, 9mm, 10mm (would be my personal preference), 40S&W (what I carry since it's more available than 10mm), 45... much bigger than that you deal with limited capacity and controllability IMO. For bear defense, a 45 is the absolute smallest I'd go.
Anything suitable for a human is probably fine against "small game" too.

Shoot before you buy. Carry something you're comfortable with and confident using. Get some training and know the laws if you choose to carry a firearm.
