Since there isn't much to do in the way of gardening right now where I live, except watch plants grow, I decided t start another project.
I happened to have the 55-gallon water barrel. I decided to make one of those vertical barrel gardens with it. I just finished making the holes you see here today. I still need to get a perforated piece of drainage pipe for the center. I have a pipe, but it is solid and the thought of drilling a million holes on it isn't appealing. I'll just get a new one and use the other pipe to make a smaller garden.
I can see right away that the hardest part in making these barrel gardens is making the holes. These were made by marking the lines, drilling the ends of the lines, jigsawing the lines, and melting them with a heat gun and shoving old bottles into them. In retrospect, a 2.5-3 inch hole saw would have been faster at making the holes, but this method keeps dirt from ever falling out at least. I was surprised how think the plastic was.
Everything is measured at around 4 inches. All lines/cuts are 4 inches, all spaces are for inches, all rows are 4 inches apart. Well, they are as close and possible to 4 inches while lining things up with the two ridges around the middle of the barrel.
7 rows of holes, 9 holes per row = 63 holes.
I'll pot more images later one as I get work completed. I need to make a base for it and install the central tube and drainage.
