I live in the northeast US and i backpack with a foam bedroll that i covered with an emergency blanket and a 5.5lb wool blanket. It is a compact setup which I have used to camp in 30s degree weather several times with no issues. It is important to pack appropriate clothing. You should also pack wool socks, hat, sweater, leggings and a nice pair of gloves. Layering is important for maintaining warmth but you can get away with <20lb load so long as you pack smart. I hated how bulky sleeping bags were so i opted for the wool blanket and it has served me well. Worth a try if you are considering it, but everyone is different. Wool is no meme.
