So yeah like I said, EPA clone, but leave room in the budget for stones. You may just end up wanting to get higher quality than what it comes with, like actual EPA stones, or even higher end aftermarket stuff.

But yes I'm not particularly sure of that exact claim, I've heard it said before, and it would be a good explanation for why a pull through carbide sharpener leaves and edge that dulls so fast. It could be just a messy burr, but it seems to hold longer than a burr would, but not as long as a toothy edge left by stones would. I've not been able to find any microscope images of an edge from a carbide pull through.
