>>21568With you mostly car camping, get a good cooler, and a sleeping bad and stove (etc) and then get yourself a small rig for day hikes. Small pack, canteen, change of socks, shoes to carry, good leatherman, compass or GPS if so inclined. This way you can set up a nice base camp with a tent and the luxary items and pack a small pack with lunch or snacks and water and some gear (camera, and notebook to record the trip, dry socks, rain gear etc in case needed) and explore.
