Fish bros please help me out with something here. I just started fishing 4 months ago and super excited to be an angler. I've only caught a handful of fish and the 2 i kept were trout in a small local reservoir here. The first one tasted great. The one i caught a few days ago was nice 16" rainbow. I cooked it up but i noticed during the cook it continued to smell like lake water or have a very fishy scent. I fed it to my family and was very disappointed because it was very unpleasant tasting. Almost inedible. The reason I think this was the case is because i gut hooked the poor bastard on my power bait that was floating off the bottom of the lake and he died soon after putting him on a stringer and back into the water. I don't know how long it took him to die but roughly 30 mins later I came back to look at him and saw that he had sunk and was dead on the stringer. Rigamortis had set in and his body was tail was all curved up. It was a very warm day and i continued to fish for another 30 mins. I decided to then pull him out and throw him in a small cooler i had with some ice packs and walk back to my car. He spent another hour in the cooler until i cleaned him, which was difficult because the rigamortis had made his body super stiff. I had a sense that this was an unhealthy state for the fish to be in. So i'm wondering if I made a huge mistake in leaving him on the stringer, dead in the lake on a very warm day, which caused him to turn. Has anyone else had this experience, and what do you think happened here? Also, is it unhealthy to eat a fish in the rigamortis state or is it quite common? Thanks
