There's also a southern entrance to the valley down near Canon city.
From the top parking area, there's a gate (Like a car gate you can go under/over/through) that takes you down a path, this is completely legal to hike, just blocks motor vehicles. continue for 2/3 miles through the valley and it becomes a little more of an 'experienced' hike, this is as far as people usually go - but this son of a bitch goes on for like 12 miles and no fucking body hangs out on the south side. I've spent 4/5 days out there and never seen anyone - ran into a fly fisherman once. The tailwaters that come off skaguay are fucking packed with brown and speckled trout. The water is clean as fuck as well.
