The phone app is neat though because it also shows the planets.
As far as light pollution goes, you don't need pure black skies to see something. I live in Toronto under one of those white blotches and I can still see stars out over Lake Ontario (enough to make out constellations, not just the 4 bright ones) and I saw a couple of meteors from the yard last week. If I go out to the countryside, even half an hour, I can see a lot more.
