The culmination of those things led to him being miserable and underfed.
Anyone who's lived on the edge of starvation knows the feeling of not being able to make clear decisions, and it's scary. Pile that on top of seemingly never having been in bear country and you get a dude who's in over his head. I'm sure at least half of the people who claim to go /out/ on this board have been doing so in bear populated areas since they were kids, so the fear he exhibited seemed exaggerated. If he had shot that first moose the next two episodes would have been him sitting by the first lake chewing moose fat and scaring off bears. Short of that, frankly I'm impressed he did as well as he managed.
