They work great and still have the same basic functionality of a regular bow, but when my bow has a block & tackle, scope, laser pointer and a mechanical string release, I feel less like a archer and more like a tacticool/steampunk exterminator.
Just seems like all that extra mechanical advantage takes the sport out it, even though the guy who hunts with his bare-hands probably says the same thing about clubs and spears, and the guy who hunts with clubs and spears says the same about traditional bows.
TL;DR Compound bows are subjectively weird.
