I have never carried one until recently. I always travel alone in bear/wolf country, multi-day trips. Lately I have been open-carrying a Glock 30, semi-compact .45 with one magazine, 9 rounds total (nothing in the chamber, though, so hurr durr extra seconds). Hard to describe it, but I feel more at ease, sleep better knowing I have a loud-as-fuck noisemaker to scare threatening animals off. I don't want to kill anything, but there is a certain peace-of-mind having one with me. To me, having it means I'll probably never need it. I rarely encounter bears, have only seen one wolf, and hang my food in a tree when I camp, but lately I have been a little more cautious.
