Just every living thing on a very small part of it using a somewhat controversial cocktail of vintage herbicides. I'm sure the animals will find other roosts. Its not like there arent other trees around.
If its nature you are so concerned with, consider that many people view these pictures from Mars as beautiful nature, though there are no trees. So its unfair to judge me for defoliating a small area of forest when God has made whole planets this way. I say take it up with the creator.
