>>1832608Speaking as a current forestry masters student after getting a BS in forestry, be goddamn sure its what you want to do.
I had a professor who I was her favorite student and she offered me the position right as I graduated. Accepted because I want to do fire and met way too many fire guys that were mid 30s and still GS-6 and their bodies were wrecked.
Needed a fallback plan for when my knees explode.
Speaking from experience you need to be 100% invested in the project you're doing and find it stimulating and interesting because if not it is going to be a living hell. I fucking hate my project and have grown to hate my University and the entire academic and research institution. It can make you jaded fast when you realize all the realpolitik that goes into academics, and research in particular.
It's not for everyone and you'll have to decide if you want to pursue research as a career path or use it as a stepping stone. The majority of the people you will be surrounded by will probably be pursing research professionally.
