Forests/woodlands are shitty because it's a symptom of neglect. Look at pic related. It's just a bunch of stunted trees with invasive stiltgrass and barberry, its basically what every forest in the mid-atlantic looks like. It has no ecological value.
In the past you had fires and large animals managing things and keeping it from being too overgrown. That shit about the squirrel traveling across the country without touching the ground is false. We have more trees in the USA than ever before and it's because we're too lazy/pussy to light a prescribed burn or cut down a couple trees.
