>>1610536Once you start to hike long distances or high intensity routes pack weight can start to make a big difference. You don't have to be crazy ultralight, but most people who are serious about certain activities will make some effort to reduce their pack weight.
Carrying a lighter pack will also reduce the ware and tear your body receives. I have a bad knees from work and carrying a lighter load allows me to do more outdoors than when I used to carry a heavier, more traditional load.
There is also the minimalist side of it. Being able to spend long periods out with a minimal setup is very satisfying. My pack is tiny, has no hip belt, and no sternum strap. It's way nicer to carry than some huge, framed monstrosity with tons of straps.
