Also nothing is truly completely inert. But regardless, plastic causes lots of problems with the environment that are well documented. Aside from anything with a round shape massively fucking with animal life all the time, most plastic is photo-degradable, meaning sunlight causes it to break into smaller pieces. These small pieces still take centuries to disappear, and when consumed by animals (as they often are because they can be brightly colored) they can cause lots of intestinal blockages and health problems that can only be fixed with medical treatment, which usually isn't available to wild animals that eventually die a slow and painful death.
