You can just use dead-and-down wood to make your fire. Cutting limbs off trees is a neat skill to have, I guess, but usually, you're just going to end up with a bunch of green wood that won't burn well anyway.
As long as you're not actually in a pay campground (or too far above treeline), there's not a spot in the entire range where you won't find enough dead-and-down sticks and logs to make any size fire that you want. Pic highly related.
As a bonus, you don't have to mangle any trees.
