After three years of passive gardening I think I officially have a plan on how to convert my compacted urban clay and limestone yard into an actually cultivatable space:
>Grow in SIP (sub irrigated planter) containers in a soil-free medium like peat moss and perlite with organic fertilizers and lime.>Place containers in part shade provided by current trees as full sun, even in winter, will completely dry out any medium. >In areas of full sun, build a shade frame that will allow for the otherwise barren space to be occupied by containers.>While I harvest from a clusterfuck of containers, build up the soil with bags of leaves, grass, and green manures while letting the native trees the squirrels plant such as hackberries, pecans, sycamores, and crepe myrtles develop shade throughout the yard.>Once the soil isn't perpetually exposed to Texan sun death rays, actually planting in-ground will become more and more feasible. Especially as the trees begin to build the soil for me by breaking up limestone with their roots and shedding leaves for mulch.I am so envious of you anons with actual soil. This shit requires a pickaxe to break up and quickly becomes hydrophobic if you do not routinely water the new soil added.
Fuck Texas.
