I've gotten one parking ticket ever, for $15. The more yuppie infested the area, the more parking regulations there will be. Don't be afraid to ask, call up the city hall or look online.
There is ALWAYS somewhere to park for a night. Switch it up if you are staying in the same general area. Never more than 2 nights unless you look up the law. Some places have a limit on how many days you can have a vehicle parked in the same place on a road, some places do not. Varies from town to town.
