If you are practicing for a larger commercial-grade operation, go with individual cages for does and their babies. If you are fortifying a permaculture operation, individual cages are still fine, but group living is also possible. Colony-style setups have their disadvantages: increased parasite load, cleaning difficulties, rabbit access difficulties, low-quality or absent husbandry records, and so on. Colonies may cost less to fence, but you will pay for it somehow. Rabbits will at times not hesitate to kill each other, so colonies may not even lead to overall welfare benefits. Try both and see what you can learn.
