i like to make night walks in my city, especially when i feel a bit melancholic. I like contrasts and definitely the quietness and empty streets stand sharp against daily city life. It's thought provoking. The other lone figures you encounter just mind their own business, each with their reasons and story to be there, not just that night, but their life in general. It's the same reason why i like countryside highways at night, riding them, but also just standing on a bridge over them, smoking a cigarette.
I live in Antwerp, which isn't too big of a city, but it has the second largest port in Europe and it is its cocaine capital. I'd mostly walk towards the "old" city center and through it and then walk back along a stretch of the riverside, with a view of the lighting up in the distance.
When i lived in the south of town i'd sometimes walk towards Petroleum Zuid, an abandoned petroleum industry site just south of the ringway. The area is is closed in by the river, train tracks, and a small nature reserve, and it only has 3 acces points. So at night you would see a lot of sketchy stuff going on. I've seen a few deals going on, a few times one or more parked cars with all the lights on but noone in there and a big drug bust by the police. I've also been to an illegal goa rave there (not stumbled upon, knew some people organising it). Another time while i was walking there at night with a friend this car drives by way too fast drift turn stopping right besides us. We thought we were fucked but then this old grey haired lady jumps out while shouting "COME,COME,COME,COME,COME" immediately after which about 20 cats appeared she went on to feed. It was hilarious, Crazy cat lady made us shit bricks. At the edge of this area there was also the best "underground" club of Antwerp, called Petrol, which is recently shut cause they are gonna get rid of the whole area in the name of city development. RIP our own mini Tsjernobyl
