You really have to acclimate a German Shepard to get it used to strangers or they are dangerous dogs.
Pit bulls account for far fewer attacks although when they do attack, I believe it's the most severe. There might also be another variable where people respect pit bulls and don't go running up them but think they can throw their arms around every German Shepard they see.
Both breeds make me a little nervous if I don't know that dog personally.
