A hotel room costs the same as two tanks of gas, so the VW sort of pays for itself, except you need to find a shower every once in a while. I try to plan a route so I run across a nice hot spring every day or two, which is easy in the west. The campsite in this pic:
>>89269is in the Sand Flats area above Moab, which costs ten bucks a night, right next door to some excellent mountain bike, hiking, motorcycle and 4WD trails. I think there is a public swimming pool in Moab, so you can use the shower there. They love all the mountain bike and 4WD tourists, bread and butter for the locals.
