I personally hate the ocean, and I've been to quite a few beach fronts in different climates. I'm not a fan of swimming in saltwater, or sand really.
I was born in a landlocked state, around mountains and I enjoy them much more. With mountain terrain I can hike, shoot my bow/gun, hunt, fish (without a huge boat), and ski.
I've done surfing about a half dozen times and quite frankly I think it's more work than it's worth, coming from someone who has skied their whole life. Even skinning up the mountain for backcountry turns is more rewarding than surfing imo.
My family is Australian too, and I've heard multiple stories of family, including my father, almost drowing, getting caught in rips, and being stung by jelly fish.
