Most use 8x42 and no one goes above 10x50. Amazon sells some decent beginner ones for around $35. You also should only get a small field guide to birds from your area to start with and work out from there until you decide if you want to go deeper into the hobby. Research your area to find some decent areas to find birds and go out and have fun with it.
