It's plenty big enough to cover a hammock. I've used it on 4 or 5 trips with no complaints, however it's only rained very lightly once. So I can't attest to how waterproof it is.
It may weight slightly more than a normal tarp since it has a zip on one side, but since it can be made into a tent in a pinch, I think it's worth it. It's not that heavy to begin with. I have no complaints about it. Was $30 when I got it.
