They are mainly good for locating structures, determining bottom type, giving a convenient surface temp reading, and determining water depth.
All of which you can do from shore with the right tools.

A fucking innertube, and a pair of flippers will get you around the lake in warmer climates, if you need waders, you're looking at maybe 100-200 bucks with shipping costs.
