I've also been mugged plenty times abroad. Well at least, attempts of it.
I always carry several wallets, promotional ones I got for free, each containing a bit of money (about 7-10€ worth), some various cards: business cards, expired credit cards, loyalty cards... and I always add one of those small notebooks designed to look like a passport, on which I glue some random ID card. In the end, it looks like a real wallet someone would carry, so I just give the thug one of these and he runs away with it believing it's the real deal. To keep it consistent, these are also the wallets I use when I have to pay for something, so people can see me taking some money out of it, and see I don't have a secret compartment somewhere where I keep my money.
Used this trick seven times already, worked every single time. It's a simple way to get out of such situations that could potentially be dangerous otherwise.
Though that depends on the situation. I most of the time just pull out my 15 inch knife and it's enough to have them run away.
