Anyways, I always pull them out with my fingers, then check the site for the head/etc. I've never had the head stay behind, but if the head is still in there, I would get it out the same way I would get out a sliver - tweezers + needle. As for ticks in hairy areas, eg your scalp, you can VERY easily tell they are there - they are bumps on your scalp. Just run your fingers along your scalp to find them.
The worst though, are finding the gigantic engorged ticks on you. Completely revolting.
