Ever ridden a dirt bike before? The quad's going to behave like a smallbore moto with four wheels, clutch and everything.

Quads are a little more difficult than a motorcycle to work on, only because there's more stuff in the way. Front steering/suspension/axle rather than an axle bolt and forks/triple tree, but once the engine's out of the frame they're pretty similar.
If you've got a decent socket set, rattle gun (for clutch nut), gear puller, chain breaker, a couple of syringes for bleeding fluids, and some mechanical know-how (or friends that are willing to help you out, that's how Iearned most of my wrenching) you can do the work without a lot of trouble.
Search the internet for a service manual and go from there.

I'll be doing a top-end on my moto in a few months.

Expect to spend $70-100/hour for shop labor. They'll also whack you for OEM parts if you do bust something.

There's a lot of aftermarket parts options out there that work just as well as OEM stuff, and they're usually quite a bit cheaper.

Learning to work on the bike is worth your time. Not only will you save a ton of $ doing the work yourself, but you'll also know how to fix it or what's wrong when something breaks innawoods.

Wrenching is a part of riding. Take care of your shit and you won't have to wrench as often. And preventative maintenance goes a long way.

Worth noting the cost of consumable items too... Just like a car, some things wear out. In fact, a lot of things wear out faster on a bike than they do on a car.
Tires, I get about 1500 miles on a rear, 3000 on a front. The tires are about $100 each.
Bikes need their oil changed a lot more often than cars. I go 20-30 hours on mine, during the summer riding season that's an oil change once or twice a month. Oil, filters, gaskets/seals, etc.
Valve adjustments, chain/sprockets, brakes, grips, levers, wheel bearings...

At 60-70mpg around town, $250/yr to insure, and $72.50/yr for registration... it's worth it. My bike paid for itself about 2 years after I bought it in fuel savings alone vs. the truck's 12mpg.

To have a shop do a complete engine rebuild would probably cost me $2000. Doing it myself I can do it for about $600 in parts and a weekend or two in the garage. Pic related.
