I've done 8-10 hour hikes with a good deal of elevation gain with pic related. I was used to them, and I found them to be more comfortable than any hiking shoes I had at the time. The big problem I envision for hiking boots is the grip of the treads on more slippery surfaces. But if you are extra careful it should be ok.
tldr you can hike in any shoe that you can live in comfortably.
