I have a year of rock climbing experience and been hiking my whole life and took my local clubs course and it was a blast plus you meet a lot of potential partners. There are things "you know you don't know" like maybe self arresting or glissading and things "you don't know you don't know" like you can get a sunburn on the roof of your mouth from snow if you mouth breath long enough.
If you want to do it yourself then start carrying a progressively heavy pack on your hikes and get a lot of elevation gain on them, ideally the same amount as whatever mountain you are wanting to climb. You should aim to carry at least a 35lb pack comfortably as a starting goal. Grab a copy of Freedom of The Hills and start reading and don't overlook the mountain weather section, being able to research past weather patterns and see potential hazards coming is crucial.
I'm fortunate to live in the PNW, God's gift to Earth, so have plenty of mountains to climb.
